EcoBoost Generations & Fitment Reference: Every F-150 Year, Engine & Code
The definitive Ford EcoBoost fitment reference — F-150 generations by year, 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost engine generations, body codes, and which parts carry across each so you order the right turbo, tuner, and charge pipe the first time.

Ordering EcoBoost parts goes wrong in one predictable way: assuming “3.5 EcoBoost” or “2.7 EcoBoost” means one part. It doesn’t. Ford has run the EcoBoost across three F-150 body generations and two distinct engine generations each, and the turbos, injectors, charge-air routing, and electronics change across those lines. This reference maps every EcoBoost F-150 by year, engine generation, and body code so you match parts the first time — and links each generation to the categories that fit it.
F-150 Generations at a Glance
The body-generation years and the 2011/2015 EcoBoost launch model years below match Wikipedia’s Ford F-150 entry.
| Body generation | Years | Body code | EcoBoost engines offered |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12th gen | 2009–2014 | P415 | 3.5 EcoBoost (Gen 1, 2011+ only) |
| 13th gen | 2015–2020 | P552 | 3.5 EcoBoost (Gen 1 → Gen 2), 2.7 EcoBoost (Gen 1 → Gen 2) |
| 14th gen | 2021–present | P702 | 3.5 EcoBoost (Gen 2), 3.5 PowerBoost hybrid, 2.7 EcoBoost (Gen 2) |
The body generation tells you the truck; the engine generation tells you the parts. A 2016 and a 2017 F-150 look nearly identical and share the P552 body, but their 3.5 EcoBoosts are different engines — that split matters more than the year on the title. Note the 12th gen is the one case where body and engine years diverge: the P415 body launched for 2009, but the EcoBoost didn’t join it until 2011, so 2009–2010 P415 trucks exist and share the body’s wheel bolt pattern and hardware — they just aren’t EcoBoost-powered.
3.5 EcoBoost Engine Generations
The 3.5 is the original EcoBoost and the platform under the Raptor and Ford’s highest tow ratings.
- Gen 1 (2011–2016): Direct injection only, paired with the 6-speed 6R80. Found in 2011–2014 P415 trucks (the EcoBoost-equipped tail of the 12th-gen body, which spans 2009–2014) and early 2015–2016 P552 trucks. This is the engine most likely to want its failure-prone factory charge pipes addressed and an upgraded intercooler to fight heat-soak.
- Gen 2 (2017+): Added port fuel injection alongside direct injection — a meaningful change that helps the intake-valve carbon question — plus revised turbos and the 10-speed 10R80 automatic. The dual-injection system changes fuel-system parts and tuning strategy, so tuner and fuel-system fitment splits at 2017.
- Raptor high-output 3.5 (2017+): A high-output tune of the Gen 2 with its own supporting hardware. Confirm Raptor-specific fitment rather than assuming standard 3.5 parts carry over.
If you’re weighing the 3.5 against the 2.7 for a build, the 2.7 vs 3.5 EcoBoost guide breaks down power, towing, and where each wants upgrades first, and the turbo upgrade guide covers restore-vs-upgrade paths by engine.
2.7 EcoBoost Engine Generations
The 2.7 “Nano” is the lighter, efficient twin-turbo V6 that joined the F-150 for 2015.
- Gen 1 (2015–2017): Compacted-graphite-iron block, direct injection, 6-speed. A stout, efficient engine that still wakes up nicely with bolt-ons and a tune.
- Gen 2 (2018+): Added port fuel injection and revised internals, later paired with the 10-speed. As on the 3.5, the dual-injection change means fuel and intake parts split between the early and later 2.7.
Both 2.7 generations respond strongly to the same core bolt-ons — a tuner, an upgraded intercooler, upgraded charge pipes, and a cold air intake — but match the exact year, because the housings and injectors differ across the Gen 1 / Gen 2 line.
EcoBoost Beyond the F-150
The same engines power much of Ford’s lineup, and fitment logic carries over — match the engine generation, not just the badge:
- 3.5 EcoBoost: Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, Explorer Sport / Explorer ST, Transit, and the earlier Taurus SHO, Flex, and Lincoln MKS/MKT.
- 2.7 EcoBoost: Bronco, Edge Sport / Edge ST, Lincoln Nautilus, and Fusion Sport.
Parts listed for an F-150 EcoBoost frequently fit these platforms when the engine generation matches — but cooling, packaging, and charge-air routing vary by vehicle, so verify before ordering. For OEM and used cross-platform parts, eBay Motors is usually the better marketplace than Amazon; use the eBay buttons above.
Moving an EcoBoost into a chassis Ford never put it in is a different exercise again: the engine itself is the easy part, and the mounts, harness adapters, cooling routing and accessory brackets are the job. That hardware lives in the swap kits category, and the same generation rule applies twice over — the donor engine’s generation decides the harness, the injection system and the transmission it expects to bolt to.
How to Use This When You Buy
- Identify your body generation by year (12th/13th/14th, above). Body generation — not engine — is what sets bolt pattern, hub bore and the sizes that clear without rubbing; the wheel and tire fitment guide has those figures by generation.
- Identify your engine generation — the key split is the 3.5 at 2017 and the 2.7 at 2018, when both gained port injection.
- Match parts to the engine generation, not just displacement. A “3.5 EcoBoost turbo” that fits a 2013 will not necessarily fit a 2019.
- Buy new bolt-ons on Amazon Automotive — browse all categories — and used or OEM parts on eBay Motors with the buttons above.
Once fitment is settled, the order you buy in matters as much as the parts themselves: the EcoBoost performance parts build order covers what to fix before adding power, why the tune goes on first, and which supporting parts each stage demands.
If you’re buying used rather than modding what you already own, pair this with the EcoBoost years to avoid — and best years to buy reference, which turns these generation splits into a year-by-year inspection checklist.
When you know your generation, the rest of the reference layer follows: the turbo upgrade guide, the intercooler & charge-pipe guide, the tuner buyer’s guide (tune files are generation-specific — this is where the fitment split bites hardest), and the category pages for turbos, intercoolers, charge pipes, tuners, fuel system, air intake, and swap kits.
